Description

Tulsi Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) is one of the most sacred herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. It was traditionally used in ceremony to purify the environment and create a sattvic or holy space, as its Latin name, sanctum, implies. Holy Basil has been used for centuries to promote immunity and stress resilience, support strength and stamina, and to enhance calm and clarity.*

Tulsi parallels the actions of ginseng (without the stimulant effects), echinacea, garlic, clove, goldenseal, ginger, oregano thyme, and turmeric. It balances Vata and Kapha and, in excess, it can increase Pitta as its energy is heating. As a kapha-reducing herb, tulsi supports the healthy expectoration of mucus from the lungs and respiratory tract, as well as the digestive tract.*

The Science on Tulsi

Tulsi has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal herb. It has been found to support stress-related homeostatic imbalances in the following areas:

  • Protects against lipid peroxidation (1)
  • Supports cholesterol levels already within a normal range (1)
  • Supports healthy immunity (2)
  • Supports antioxidant activity (3)
  • Supports balanced blood sugar (3)

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 79 individuals took 1200mg (2-3 capsules) a day for 6 weeks and 71 individuals took a placebo. Both groups were tested for stress-related issues including cognitive function, energy, forgetfulness, sleep, and sexual imbalances of recent origin. For those taking tulsi, the overall stress-coping scores improved by an additional 39% over the placebo group. (4)

One of the more popular active constituents of tulsi is eugenol. Studies suggest eugenol supports a plethora of systems in the body including the immune, cardiovascular, reproductive, gastric, urinary, and central nervous systems. It has been shown to be protective to the liver, heart, and blood and is antagonistic to unwanted microbes. (5)

As an adaptogen, tulsi has shown to support healthy organs and tissues against chemical stress from industrial pollutants and heavy metals, and physical stress from physical exertion, physical restraint, and exposure to cold and excessive noise. (6) Tulsi has also been shown to counter metabolic stress through normalization of blood glucose, blood pressure and lipid levels, and psychological stress through positive effects on memory, cognitive function and mood.
