Ayurvedic Skin Imbalances

The different skin types manifest imbalances in the following ways:

  • Imbalanced Vata skin – premature wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes.
  • Imbalanced Pitta skin – freckles and discolored appearance.
  • Imbalanced Kapha skin – clammy and oily complexion.

Wrinkles also seem to trend according to skin type parameters:

  • Vata wrinkles – worry lines (horizontal wrinkles across forehead).
  • Pitta wrinkles – crow’s feet and brow wrinkles (squinting wrinkles and creases between the eyebrows).
  • Kapha wrinkles – wrinkles around the mouth or chin.

Ayurvedic Moisturizing

According to Ayurveda, one of the keys to moisturizing the skin effectively is to use the purest ingredients. The LifeSpa Ayurvedic skin care line has absolutely no chemical preservatives. This is important because chemical preservatives are likely to congest the deep layers of the skin.

A main goal of Ayurvedic skin care is to restore the functional appearance of the skin. This is done by “exercising the skin” first to drive moisture deep into the skin and pull out impurities. This push-pull action cleanses the skin, flushing out deep-seated impurities associated with an aged appearance. Once cleansed, we can then properly moisturize.

Skin Radiance Herbs and Plant Butters

In this formula, there are 4 skin radiance herbs used to address the different skin imbalances listed above:

  1. Manjistha is a celebrated overall rejuvenative for the complexion.
  2. Neem is known as the “Queen of the Skin” for its purifying and beautifying benefits when applied topically.
  3. Shatavari promotes a glowing and lustrous appearance of the skin.
  4. Turmeric supports optimal radiance of the skin and a reduction in the presentation of fine lines.

We then soak these traditional herbs in rich plant butters:

  • Shea Butter – offers extra moisturizing benefits and protection against dull skin.
  • Mango Seed Butter – rich in emollient qualities that promote the appearance of elasticity and youthfulness.
  • Sweet Almond Oil – has excellent refreshing qualities.
  • Avocado Fruit Butter – moisturizes and softens skin.
  • Jojoba Butter – helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Kokum Seed Butter – particularly helpful for imbalanced skin.

Water – A Controversial Addition to Skin Care Products

Most skin care products contain added water as a filler. This makes them susceptible to bacteria and thus require chemical preservatives. LifeSpa products have no added water, so no preservatives are required. This also makes LifeSpa products very concentrated, so water must be added as needed during application to dilute the concentration of the products.

Ayurveda’s Take on Oil

According to Ayurveda, oil is the best choice for supporting radiant and glowing skin. For a long time, however, dermatologists have maintained that the phospholipid layer of the skin cannot absorb the oil, as vegetable oils have too large a molecule to be absorbed through this phospholipid layer of the skin.

The phospholipid layer of the skin is the waterproof layer that keeps our skin water-repellent. Our hands, which dry out more quickly, do not produce as much oil as the facial skin and have a thinner phospholipid layer, and thus are not nearly as waterproof as the skin covering the rest of the body. So, why is applying oil still considered one of Ayurveda’s most effective beauty secrets?

Interestingly, the Ayurvedic application of oil extends far beyond the modern idea of a moisturizer. The oil was used in a totally different way…

Feed the Bugs that Feed Your Skin

Our skin is home to millions of beneficial microbes. These microbes thrive on the surfaces of the skin on the inside and outside of the body. While our outer skin seems to be the skin we concern ourselves with most, the most important skin lies on the inside. In particular, the epithelium that lines the digestive tract.

The outer skin produces an oil called sebum. Sebum softens, lubricates and moisturizes the skin. It prevents the skin from drying out. In addition, it feeds the beneficial bacteria that live on the surface of the outer skin. (1)

When these microbes feed on sebum, they produce fatty acids that create the skin’s moisturizing barrier. These fatty acids moisturize and rejuvenate the skin in a way that water and most chemical moisturizers cannot. (1)

The vegetable oils that the dermatologist deemed too large a molecule to penetrate the phospholipid layer of the skin are actually not meant to penetrate the skin at all. They are meant to be food for the good bacteria living on the skin’s surface. (2)

About LifeSpa’s Ayurvedic Skin Care Line

At LifeSpa, we believe that what you put on your body is as important as what you put in your body. Today, too many skin care products are loaded with chemical preservatives that may be perceived as foreign to the body. This perception by the body can trigger a rejection of the products, making them unable to deliver the promised results.

LifeSpa’s Ayurvedic skin care formulas contain no chemical preservatives. This allows the skin a much greater chance of welcoming these products and allowing them to deliver results – working with the skin’s natural intelligence to create the appearance of healthy, plump and glowing skin.

Our skin care line is appropriate for all skin types. To adjust it for your skin’s unique needs, simply apply more or less amounts of each product. For example, less moisturizer for moist, kapha skin; more moisturizer for dry, vata skin.

If you are unsure of what skin type you have, take one of our quizzes to help personalize your skin care regimen: Skin Type Quiz or the Skin Imbalance Quiz.
